About Alishan Forest Railway
Its climb from Chiayi towards Alishan passes through changing forest zones and demonstrates the engineering needed for steep terrain, including spirals and reversing sections. Today the journey is an attraction in its own right.
Distinguish the mainline mountain journey from the shorter branches within the recreation area. Zhaoping and Shenmu serve forest visits, while the Zhushan branch is associated with sunrise travel. A ticket for one service does not automatically include the other routes, and weather or maintenance can alter the operating pattern.
What to look for
- The mainline climb shows mountain-railway engineering and changing vegetation.
- Zhaoping and Shenmu branches connect with forest visitor areas.
- The Zhushan branch forms part of a separately planned sunrise outing.
