About Beipu Old Street and Jiang A-Xin Mansion
Beipu Old Street centres on Citian Temple in a Hakka settlement in Hsinchu County. The surrounding streets bring together religious life, trading history and local food, with historic residences embedded among shops and everyday buildings. Lei cha, rice-based snacks and tea shops add to the street scene, but the architectural story extends beyond the main line of stalls.
Several landmarks belong to different stages of Beipu's development. Citian Temple expresses the settlement's shared religious life, while Jingguangfu Hall and Tianshui Hall are associated with earlier local families and land development. Jiang A-Xin Mansion represents a later chapter: Jiang built his fortune through tea, including black-tea exports, and commissioned the house for family life and receiving business guests.
Construction of the mansion began in 1946 and was completed in 1949, with a Western-style design by local architect Peng Yuli. Its carefully worked materials and formal frontage distinguish it from the older street houses. Read the old street and mansion together as a sequence of different buildings, patrons and economic periods, with interior visits arranged separately from a walk through the public lanes.
