About Dadaocheng and Dihua Street
Dihua Street is a historic commercial spine of Taipei’s Dadaocheng district. The neighbourhood grew in connection with river trade, and its narrow, deep shop-houses preserve a distinctive relationship between the street, retail business and the working spaces behind.
Decorated facades and covered arcades are key features of the streetscape. Their mixture of architectural influences reflects the district’s commercial prosperity, while the sheltered frontage responds to Taipei’s rainy climate. Look beyond individual storefront signs to see the repeated building proportions.
Tea, medicinal herbs, dried goods and cloth are among the trades associated with Dihua Street. The period before Lunar New Year brings a particularly concentrated shopping scene, but the historic buildings and ordinary commercial life remain the main context for a walk at other times.
What to look for
- Long, narrow shop-houses reveal the commercial organization of the historic street.
