About Houtong Cat Village and Mining Heritage

Houtong in Ruifang is widely known for cats around its railway settlement, but its built landscape also records an earlier coal-mining economy. The station area links these two identities, making it possible to look beyond the modern cat-themed shops.

The former mining settlement includes industrial remains and interpretation associated with coal transport and processing. Traces of railway equipment, mining buildings and workers' housing explain why a town developed in this valley and why transport remained central to its layout.

Cats are living animals within a residential community, and sightings vary. Observe them without surrounding, lifting or chasing them, and avoid treating private doorways as photography sets. Combining considerate animal watching with the mining interpretation produces a more complete understanding of Houtong.
