About Jiji Station and Railway Town
Jiji Station is a wooden railway landmark in the centre of Jiji Township, Nantou County. The station building dates to 1933 and is associated with cypress construction and a Japanese-period exterior. It was damaged in the 1999 earthquake and subsequently rebuilt, so the present structure should be described with that restoration history in view.
The branch line originally carried materials for hydroelectric construction before taking on a broader role in moving passengers, agricultural goods and timber. This gives the station an economic story beyond its picturesque appearance: the railway linked small settlements with major engineering works and the movement of local products.
The station is a useful starting point for reading the town at street level. Look at the building's relationship with its forecourt and the surrounding commercial streets, then decide whether to continue with a longer town walk or a local cycling route. Historic appearance does not establish today's train timetable or through-service availability. Treat the heritage building, an actual rail journey and other stops around Jiji as related but separate parts of the visit.
