About Mataian Wetland

Mataian Wetland (马太鞍湿地) is a spring-fed inland wetland beside the Amis community in Guangfu Township. Water flowing near the foot of Maxishan maintains a marsh landscape with aquatic plants, freshwater fish, shrimp, frogs and birds. Its significance is both ecological and cultural: this is a living community's traditional environment, not simply a pond built for sightseeing.

Local interpretation introduces palakaw, an Amis ecological fishing method associated with the wetland. Guided activities connect the way fish use the water with the community's knowledge of that habitat. The surrounding agricultural area also offers opportunities to understand local crops and food traditions through identified hosts.

A worthwhile visit pays attention to water flow, plant cover and the relationship between settlement and wetland. The ecology centre provides a starting point for that context. Cultural demonstrations and meals are organised activities, so arrange them with the host rather than assuming that arriving at the wetland includes access to a community experience.
