About Sanfeng Temple
Sanfeng Temple is a major place of worship in Kaohsiung's Sanmin District, dedicated to Nezha, also known as the Third Prince. Its earlier form, Sanfeng Pavilion, served the Sankuaicuo community near the developing railway district. The temple's history therefore connects neighbourhood identity with a widely shared deity.
The present complex stands on Hebei Second Road, following a move in 1971. Its multi-level northern-style architecture and large forecourt give it a different scale from a small street shrine. The current building should be distinguished from the much earlier foundation of the religious institution.
Painted door guardians by the artist Pan Li-shui are a particularly useful detail to look for, alongside the carved and coloured surfaces of the halls. Religious festivals can fill the precinct with performing troupes and worshippers, while an ordinary day reveals the quieter movement of people through the same ceremonial spaces. Watch how the forecourt, entrance and inner halls organise worship, and allow those using the temple room to carry out their rituals.
