About Yangliuqing Old Town and Shi Family Courtyard
Yangliuqing is a historic canal town in Tianjin’s Xiqing District, closely associated with woodblock New Year prints. The Shi Family Courtyard stands near the Southern Canal and now houses the Yangliuqing Museum. Its domestic architecture provides a setting for understanding the town’s merchant wealth and decorative arts.
The surviving residence, known as Zunmeitang, began in 1875 and contains a linked sequence of courtyards. Its theatre and carefully worked architectural details reward attention alongside the museum displays. The collection includes Yangliuqing prints, carved bricks and other folk-art material that connect the house to local craft traditions.
Move through the courts before focusing on individual objects, so the relationship between family rooms, formal spaces and performance areas becomes clear. Then compare the colours and narrative scenes of the prints with the relief decoration in the brickwork. A walk in the surrounding town adds the canal setting that an interior museum visit alone cannot provide.
What to look for
- Trace the sequence of courtyards and the domestic theatre.
