About Lhamo La-tso

Its significance comes from a tradition of contemplative lake-watching, rather than from a large temple complex on the shore. The nearby Chokorgyel monastery forms part of the same pilgrimage landscape. Set above 5,000 metres, the lake requires a deliberate mountain excursion; its quiet basin and surrounding slopes are best approached with time for local guidance and changing conditions.

The freshwater lake is roughly oval and covers about one square kilometre. Its Tibetan name means 'Lake of Palden Lhamo (吉祥天母)', the goddess associated with its religious role. From the time of the Second Dalai Lama, lake-watching developed into a formal ritual used when seeking the reincarnations of Dalai Lamas, Panchen Lamas and four major khutukhtus. Other devotees also seek visions concerning a future life. Chokorgyel Monastery (琼果杰寺), beside the lake, was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and has been rebuilt on a smaller scale.

What to look for

  • The small, enclosed oracle-lake basin and its surrounding mountain amphitheatre.
  • Chokorgyel/Qiong Guo Jie Monastery, the religious landmark associated with the lake approach.
