About Barluk Mountain Grassland Area
The range lies north of the Alataw Pass and sits between the Tianshan and the Altai, combining features of both, with grassland, snow mountains, pine forest and river valleys. The department notes that because it lies on the border it was developed late and many places keep a near-intact original appearance. CNR reports that 'Barluk' is Kazakh for 'rich, abundant, all-encompassing'.
On the range's northern foothills the department names two grasslands: Turjialiao (吐尔加辽), which it renders from Kazakh as 'the pasture of nobles', and Akqiaohu grassland (阿克乔湖草原), 35 kilometres south-west of the county seat with a total area of 2.8 million mu. CNR reports continuous stands of wild almond (野巴旦杏) in bloom within the range, and describes spring there as blue skies, lush grass and grazing livestock.
