About Kumtag Desert
The regional culture and tourism department's travel feature places Kumtag Desert on the eastern edge of the Turpan basin and records that it is both a national desert park and a 4A-grade scenic area, now combining scientific study, exploration, sand sports, sand-therapy health care and desert sightseeing.
Inside the desert the department describes flowing springs, tall old trees and a built island in a lake, with dunes rising behind; from the top of the dunes one side is open desert and the other green oasis, and sand-sledding from the dune tops is described as a characteristic experience. A 2024 municipal media centre report records that the deputy director of the scenic area management committee names March, April and May as the best months there and lists the zones the area has opened, including the Qingquan sand lake, the Happy Sand Valley, a camping base, a sand-sculpture zone and a self-drive camp base, among others.
The same report records night-time programmes with star hotels and light luxury tents, bonfire performances, song-and-dance shows and Xinjiang food, and camel riding and desert walking among the activities, and that over the three days of the Qingming holiday the area received 41,100 visitors, more than 13,000 a day. The named zones end in 等 and are not exhaustive, so the record renders them as examples. The activity programmes are the scenic area's own, not a recommended route, and the visitor figures are for one 2024 holiday.
