About Dukezong
Much of the town was rebuilt after the 2014 fire, and today its stone lanes mix visitor shops with Tibetan architectural forms. Guishan Park provides a raised view over the roofs, while its large gilded prayer wheel gives the hill a distinct landmark. The museums around Yueguang Square add historical context to a visit that otherwise works mainly as an outdoor circuit.
The town's Tibetan name means 'White Stone City', with a further association with the moon. Its origins include a stone official compound built on Daguishan (大龟山) in 634 and a later fort established by the Lang family after 1354. It became a staging post on the Yunnan-Tibet section of the Tea Horse Road (茶马古道). The name ceased to identify a county-level administrative institution when Zhongdian Ting (中甸厅) was established in 1756.
Following the fire, restoration and reconstruction led to the town's reopening on 1 January 2016. Dukezong became a national 4A tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区) in 2023. In May 2024, it was included in Yunnan's first provincial list for the protection of geographical-name cultural heritage (云南省第一批省级地名文化遗产保护名录), recognising the historic place name.
