About Jianshui Confucian Temple

The complex developed through successive periods, but its strongest visitor impression comes from the progression of open courts and formal halls. The principal Xianshi Hall is the architectural focus.

Look particularly at the hall’s stone columns and roof form. The outer columns are carved from single pieces of bluish stone, contrasting with the upper structure and the broad hip-and-gable roof. Following the courtyards towards the hall makes the ritual sequence easier to read than approaching the building as a single detached monument.

The temple was founded in 1285 and enlarged during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its present grounds cover 76,000 square metres. Lingxing Gate (棂星门) dates from 1785, while the principal hall was built during the Hongzhi era (弘治). The complex became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2001.

The south-facing plan places the temple along a central axis with educational buildings to either side. Xuehai (学海), the ritual pond behind the entrance, has an irregular oval outline and occupies about half the grounds. Sile Pavilion (思乐亭) stands on an island connected to the shore by a three-arched stone bridge.

What to look for

  • Six successive courtyards create the temple’s ceremonial progression.
  • Xianshi Hall has carved stone outer columns and a hip-and-gable roof.
