About Tuanshan Old Village

According to the Honghe prefectural government, the village's founding ancestor, Zhang Fuyuan, came from Poyang county in Jiangxi's Raozhou prefecture, arriving in the Lin'an area to trade during the Ming Hongwu era before eventually settling at Tuanshan; his descendants later made money mining at nearby Gejiu in the late-Qing Guangxu era and returned to build family mansions. The village today retains 15 well-preserved traditional residences, 3 village gates, 3 temples and 1 ancestral hall, covering 18,384.5 square metres of site area and 16,158 square metres of built area, in the southern-Yunnan architectural forms known as 'three wings and a screen wall', 'quadrangle with five courtyards' and 'galleried corner towers', with interiors carrying carved and painted woodwork alongside stone and brick carving.

The village was listed by the World Monuments Fund on its watch list in 2006 and named a Yunnan tourism characteristic village in 2011. In 2012 it was named a National Characteristic Landscape Village, when the Zhang Family Garden, the Zhang clan ancestral hall, Huang'en House and other buildings among 12 residences were listed as National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units; it was rated a national 4A scenic area in 2014 and received further national and provincial tourism-village recognition in 2015 and 2016.
