About Laomudeng Village

The village retains a complete set of traditional Nu culture and customs, and its Christian church, like others built in canyon villages by French missionaries, is a local landmark; Fugong County's Nu, Lisu, Bai and Tibetan residents mostly share Christian belief, alongside others who follow Catholicism, Tibetan Buddhism or traditional folk religions, coexisting peacefully.

The village's guesthouse economy traces to Yu Wulin, who was selected more than two decades ago to represent Nu culture at the China Nationalities Museum in Shanghai; after returning home he began hosting visiting backpackers for free before opening the village's first guesthouse, which led to more than 20 guesthouses being built in the village. Yu Wulin is a Yunnan-level intangible-cultural-heritage inheritor of Nu folk songs, and his aunt, Ya Yong, is a provincial-level inheritor of the Nu 'mouth harp'; the two perform together for visitors with the Nu stringed instrument dabiya and the mouth harp.
