About Menghuan Golden Pagoda

The present monument is a modern rebuilding that brings together the memory of earlier pagodas. Its central bell-like tower rises from an octagonal base, with smaller towers gathered around the upper platforms. Inside the lower hall, Buddha figures face the four directions around a central support. Look at the building’s overall silhouette from the grounds before studying its repeated shapes and decoration at close range.

A proposal in 2003 brought together the rebuilding of the former town pagoda and the pagoda on Leiyarang Hill (雷崖让山), which had been destroyed in 1966. The foundation ceremony took place on 30 June 2004, and relics were installed on 12 May 2006. Completion was marked by consecration and a bodhi-tree planting ceremony on 1 May 2007.

The tower rises seventy-three metres from a base fifty metres wide. Although associated with Theravada Buddhism, it also incorporates figures from Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Its enshrined images include Shakyamuni (释迦牟尼), Guanyin (观音) and Maitreya (弥勒), reflecting the presence of several Buddhist traditions within the monument.

What to look for

  • The octagonal base and bell-shaped central tower create a clear, layered silhouette.
  • Four-direction Buddha figures and groups of smaller towers add detail to the main structure.
