Yuanmou Earth Forest 元谋土林

Yuanmou Tulin

Yuanmou’s earth forests are eroded sediment landscapes, where runoff has cut channels between pillars and ridges.

About Yuanmou Earth Forest

Wumao offers managed paths for looking closely at coloured layers and the grooves left by water, while Langbapu presents dense groups of taller, often conical columns. These are separate developed scenic areas within a much larger geological landscape. Choose one for a focused visit or arrange a road transfer between them; stay on the visitor paths rather than climbing the fragile formations.

The formations developed from thick deposits laid down by rivers and lakes, with their origins traced to about 1.5 million years ago. Gravel and sand layers contain thin clay beds. The thick, closely cemented rock resists wind and pressure. Tectonic activity in the basin and its dry climate also supported the development of columns, towers and cones.

The earth forests occupy elevations between 1,000 and 1,500 metres in a dry, hot valley environment. Low rainfall and marked temperature differences between day and night characterise the setting. Mineral composition produces yellow, red, grey and white tones in the soil. The formations remain vulnerable to weathering and erosion, with monitoring and ecological restoration forming part of their protection.

What to look for

  • Wumao shows layered sediment, erosion grooves and closely spaced earth pillars.
  • Langbapu has dense groups of conical columns and a broader earth-forest panorama.
