About Yunnan University Donglu Campus Historic Buildings
Huizeyuan was founded on 20 April 1923 and completed in 1924, on the site of the Mingyuan Tower of the old Yunnan examination compound, and served as the main teaching building of Donglu University. The Wuhua District heritage record describes a mixed structure of brick and timber, brick and stone and reinforced concrete, two storeys rising to three in part, covering 2,484 square metres of ground with 3,954 square metres of floor area. Its street front is composed in a Western manner: a plinth storey with a stone footing, a bluestone string course dividing it from the upper wall, red brickwork with rectangular windows below and arched windows on the second storey, dressed bluestone laid in alternating widths at the corners and around the openings, and four classical columns across the centre. The district record attributes the design to the influence of late French Renaissance architecture, and the State Council listed the building on 7 October 2019 in the eighth batch of national key cultural relic protection units, as entry 8-0715-5-199 dated 1924. The building now houses the Yunnan University History Museum.
The campus also holds the Yunnan Gongyuan, the hall where Yunnan sat the provincial civil-service examinations under the Ming and the Qing. The heritage-database record kept by the ICOMOS conservation centre in Xi'an dates the group from the Ming to the Republican period and lists Yingqiuyuan and the former residence of Xiong Qinglai and Li Guangtian within it. That residence was begun in 1937 as a two-storey earth-and-timber house facing south, with Xiong Qinglai's reception room on the ground floor and a bedroom or office above; Li Guangtian, later a president of the university, lived there from 1957 to 1968. The group was published as a third-batch provincial protected unit of Yunnan in December 1987.
