About Yanziling Fishing Terrace
A stone gateway, shrine and stele garden turn the riverbank into a literary and commemorative landscape. The inscriptions include later writers’ responses to the place, so the visit reaches beyond the story of one recluse. The boat approach is part of the experience, bringing the wooded river slopes and terrace setting into view before landing.
Yan Guang, courtesy name Ziling, was born in Yuyao (余姚) in the Kuaiji (会稽) region and was a close friend of Liu Xiu, the future Emperor Guangwu of Han, in his youth. After Liu Xiu became emperor, Yan Guang changed his name and withdrew from public life to fish on the banks of the Fuchun River. Though the emperor invited him repeatedly and the two once shared a bed and talked through the night, Yan Guang remained unmoved and chose retirement in the Fuchun Mountains.
During the Mingdao era of Song Renzong's reign, the official and writer Fan Zhongyan (范仲淹) was demoted to a post in Muzhou (睦州), an area now comprising Tonglu, Jiande and Chun'an, where he built the Yan Xiansheng Shrine (严先生祠) so that Yan Guang's descendants could offer sacrifices to him.
