About Shuanglong Cave
Visitors enter the narrow section lying flat in a small boat, under staff direction, before reaching the stalactite and stalagmite landscape inside. Dragon-head-like formations beside the entrance explain the cave’s name. The contrast between the broad outer chamber and compressed passage makes the spatial sequence central to the visit; the boat transfer depends on current cave conditions and operating arrangements.
The water-filled karst cavity formed around one hundred million years ago and contains an eight-metre-high stone waterfall. Ancient cliff inscriptions survive in the outer chamber. The cave belongs to a wider scenic area containing other caves, including Binghu Cave (冰壶洞), Taoyuan Cave (桃源洞) and Chaozhen Cave (朝真洞).
The writer Ye Shengtao (叶圣陶) recorded his visit in an account of two caves at Jinhua. An abridged version, titled Remembering Jinhua's Shuanglong Cave (记金华的双龙洞), became a primary-school Chinese textbook lesson. The broader Shuanglong Scenic Area (双龙风景名胜区), which includes several separate scenic districts, received national 5A tourist-attraction designation in 2024.
What to look for
- The low water passage creates the cave’s unusual reclining-boat entrance.
- Dragon-like entrance formations lead to stalactites and stalagmites in the inner chamber.
