About Dingcun village
The houses are the visible focus of this visit: older single courtyards in the northern group contrast with the deeper, linked courts farther south. Courtyard No. 1 houses a folk museum, while No. 17 is noted for a timber honorary arch. Keep these historic residences distinct from the much earlier Dingcun archaeological discoveries discussed in regional museums.
Dingcun lies on the east bank of the Fen River (汾河) in Xiangfen County, about 4 kilometres from the county seat. The Dingcun archaeological site was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in the first batch in 1961, and the Dingcun folk houses were listed in the third batch in 1988.
The village preserves more than twenty Ming- and Qing-dynasty residences, most belonging to the Ding clan, grouped into northern, central and southern sections covering a total area of about 90,000 square meters. The northern group dates from the Ming dynasty, its earliest building raised in 1593, and consists mainly of single courtyards, while the central and southern groups were built between the Qing Yongzheng and Xianfeng eras and mostly form two-entry courtyards.
The residences follow a 'foursquare' plan, with main halls, wing rooms to the east and west, corridors and entrance gateways; the village contains 40 complete sets of such courtyards totalling 598.5 jian of rooms, each jian about 15 square meters. Courtyard No. 1, now a folk museum, was established in 1745, and Courtyard No. 17 contains a wooden imperial-edict archway (圣旨牌坊) erected in 1855.
