About Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island
Channels, willow-covered ground and wetlands dominate the terrain, while the Chinese-side visitor area includes Dongji Pagoda and a raised wetland route. The island is divided between China and Russia, so a normal visit from Fuyuan covers only the authorised Chinese-side attractions. The value of the circuit is the contrast between the broad river geography, the pagoda landmark and the wetland seen at close range.
In the late Qing dynasty, Russia gained control of the area beyond the Heilongjiang River's east bank under the Treaty of Aigun (瑷珲条约) and the Treaty of Peking (中俄北京条约), making the confluence of the Heilongjiang and Ussuri rivers the border between the two countries. Soviet forces occupied the island during the 1929 Sino-Soviet conflict over the Chinese Eastern Railway. In 2004, China and Russia redrew the border here, and the island's western part was returned to China.
The island system lies at the confluence of the Heilongjiang (Amur) and Ussuri rivers and comprises 93 islands and sandbars, including Yinlong Island (银龙岛) and Heixiazi Island itself, with a total area of about 335 square kilometers. Administratively, the Chinese portion belongs to Fuyuan City in Jiamusi, Heilongjiang, while the Russian portion falls under Khabarovsk Krai's Khabarovsk District.
