About 1000 Trees
Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, it draws on mountain forms and the idea of hanging gardens.
Tree-bearing structural columns rise through the stepped exterior, making the building itself the main architectural attraction. Look at how planting changes the outline of the terraces and how the complex meets the creek-side industrial neighbourhood.
The complex, formally known as Dayang Jingdian · Tianan Qian Shu (大洋晶典·天安千树), occupies the former site of the Fufeng Fuxin Flour Mill (阜丰福新面粉厂), where four historic buildings survive within the development. It opened on 22 December 2021, with more than 120 businesses launching alongside the mall, and on 28 May 2023 it became a designated Shanghai 'art new space' (美术新空间).
The main structure of a second phase topped out in April 2023. The phase includes creative offices, commercial space, a Kaiyue Zhenxuan (凯悦甄选) designer hotel, and four protected buildings. The complex stands beside Suzhou Creek (苏州河). Its mountain form is shaped by 400 steps and 1000 structural columns arranged as terraces, on which more than 1000 plants are grown.
