About Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
Its building rises in a spiral, with a prominent glass sphere at the centre.
The architecture was intended to express scientific and technological progress, with the sphere evoking the origin of life in water. This built form remains a useful subject even as exhibition programmes change. Confirm the current opening and gallery arrangements before committing to a science-museum visit, and distinguish this venue from the Natural History Museum and Astronomy Museum.
The museum project was approved in 1996 and was originally named Shanghai Science and Technology City (上海科技城), planned as a key project for popularizing science in the Yangtze River Delta region, and construction began in 1998. It was designed jointly by the American firm RTKL International (RTKL国际有限公司) and the Shanghai Architectural Design and Research Institute (上海建筑设计研究院), covering 68,000 square meters with a floor area of 98,000 square meters and a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan.
Its conference halls were completed in time to host the ninth APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting on 21 October 2001, and the museum opened to the public on 18 December 2001. The museum operates two branches, a natural history branch (自然博物分馆) on Beijing West Road (北京西路) and a specimen building (标本楼) on Longwu Road (龙吴路). In 2012 the National Cultural Heritage Administration (国家文物局) recognized it as one of the second batch of national first-grade museums (国家一级博物馆).
What to look for
- The rising spiral organizes the museum’s architectural form.
- The central glass sphere provides the building’s symbolic focal point.
