About Shanghai Astronomy Museum
An oculus, inverted dome and planetarium sphere give the building three distinct astronomical forms.
Inside, the Home, Cosmos and Odyssey exhibition areas move from familiar surroundings toward the wider universe and the history of exploration. Select these galleries separately from any booked dome-film programme. The museum is in Lingang near Dishui Lake, so it fits a different travel plan from the science museums in central Pudong.
The project received approval from the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission (上海市发改委) on 29 January 2014. The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (上海科技馆) was responsible for construction, and the astronomy museum is one of its branches. The Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院上海天文台) provided technical support, while Ennead Architects designed the building. Construction began on 8 November 2016 and was completed and accepted in June 2020. Trial operations took place on 5 and 10 July 2021, followed by the opening on 17 July and public access the following day.
What to look for

Background & history
Shanghai Astronomy Museum is a planetarium opened in 2021 in Lingang New City, Pudong New Area district, Shanghai. Its dome covers 38,000 square meters. It is the world's largest planetarium in terms of building scale. The planetarium, designed by New York City based Ennead Architects, serves as an educational and entertainment site for visitors. It is part of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. With no straight lines or right angles, the building was designed to reflect the shapes, movement and geometry of the universe. Ennead Architects design partner, Thomas J Wong, explained that the foundational design concept of the museum was to "abstractly embody within the architecture some of the fundamental laws of astrophysics, which are the rule in space."
