About Pudong International Airport

Terminals 1 and 2 connect to separate satellite concourses through internal people movers.

For an arriving visitor, the useful sequence is the booked terminal, baggage and arrival formalities, then the chosen ground connection. Metro, maglev and the Airport Link Line serve different onward journeys. The maglev connects with Longyang Road; it does not run directly to Hongqiao. Check your airline’s terminal assignment and current railway information before travel.

International flights began at Pudong on October 19, 1999, with All Nippon Airways, Lufthansa, Northwest Airlines and Turkish Airlines among the first foreign carriers, and all international and Hong Kong/Macau flights previously at Hongqiao transferred here on October 27, 2002. A second runway opened in March 2005, and a second construction phase, adding a second terminal, a third runway and a cargo terminal, began in December 2005 and started operation on March 26, 2008.

In March 2018 Pudong became the first civil airport in mainland China with Category III instrument-landing capability, on runway 34L. Construction of a third passenger terminal, a satellite terminal and two additional runways began in 2021, intended to raise annual capacity from 60 million to 80 million passengers and to six million tons of freight. The airport also serves as an Asia-Pacific cargo hub for FedEx, UPS and DHL, whose hub opened in July 2012.

Pudong International Airport lies beside the coast in eastern Pudong, about 30 kilometers from the city center, planned to cover 45.66 square kilometers with around 37.8 square kilometers currently developed. Run by Shanghai Airport Group (上海机场集团), it handles most of Shanghai's international flights and its Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan routes together with some domestic services, while Hongqiao Airport serves mainly domestic mainland routes.
