About Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park
A snow-mountain setting contrasts with a tropical volcano environment, with bridges across a canal connecting the two parts.
The landscape provides a useful route even before choosing individual rides or animal programmes. Begin in the polar setting, cross to the tropical side and choose activities from the current park map. Show schedules and animal access can change, so they should not be inferred from opening-era attraction lists.
Development of the park had begun by at least 2012, when it was originally planned for a site on the east side of Dishui Lake (滴水湖) in Pudong's Lingang area. Before construction, Haichang commissioned three design firms — Romero VanRell Jeng and Associates, FORREC and Legacy Entertainment — to prepare competing designs, and local officials chose Legacy Entertainment's plan, which was then adapted for a new site on the lake's west side. Groundbreaking took place on March 29, 2015, and trial operations began on October 1, 2018.
The completed park is arranged into five theme areas, Renyu Wan (人鱼湾), Jidi Xiaozhen (极地小镇), Bingxue Wangguo (冰雪王国), Haidi Qiyu (海底奇域) and Haiyang Buluo (海洋部落), together with an on-site ocean-themed resort hotel. Its animal collection includes more than 20 polar-animal species and over 300 fish species, totalling more than 20,000 individual fish.
The park occupies 29.7 hectares with a total planned area of about 190,000 square meters, and was named a national 4A tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区) in 2020. In July 2022 it opened what was described as the world's first Ultraman-themed exhibition hall (奥特曼主题馆), before temporarily closing on November 25, 2022.
