About Moca Shanghai

Its programme includes contemporary art and design, making it distinct from the larger museums elsewhere in the city.

The changing exhibitions are the central reason to visit, so choose the current programme before setting aside time for the galleries. The park setting allows an indoor exhibition to be combined with a green-space walk in central Shanghai. Do not confuse this institution with the Power Station of Art or China Art Museum, which have different buildings, collections and locations.

MOCA Shanghai was established in 2012 inside People's Park on Nanjing West Road (南京西路), with a total floor area of 4,000 square meters. It was built with funding from the Gong Mingguang Foundation (龚明光基金会) and approved by the Shanghai municipal government as a non-profit, independently run art institution.

The museum sits within the city's central administrative and cultural district, alongside the Shanghai Museum, the former Shanghai Art Museum, the Shanghai Grand Theatre, the Shanghai municipal government building and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Its exhibition halls occupy the first and second floors, with a combined area of nearly 1,800 square meters and temperature and humidity control systems for the artworks on display.

Public areas include a visitor service desk and a museum shop, while the third floor holds the MoCA on the Park art space and a restaurant. The museum holds a year-round programme of contemporary art and design exhibitions, and its exhibitions have included retrospectives on figures from the fashion and creative world alongside contemporary Chinese and international art.

What to look for

  • Contemporary art and design exhibitions give the museum a changing programme.
  • The building sits within People’s Park rather than on a separate monumental museum campus.
