About Yuantouzhu
The shore paths and Changchun Bridge provide views across the water and through the park’s planted landscape.
Cherry blossom is a seasonal attraction, while tourist boats connect with the Sanshan Islands when services operate. Begin with the peninsula itself before deciding on a boat extension. Choose Chongshan or Dushan gate according to the current visitor plan, as the entrance choice affects the route through the grounds.
The name is first recorded in Ming-dynasty writing describing a large rock at the point resembling a turtle's head; the Ming-era recluse Gao Panlong (高攀龙) lived here, and in 1895 the Wuxi magistrate Liao Lun (廖纶) added a rock inscription reading 'Baoyun Wuyue' (包孕吴越). In 1916 the industrialist Yang Hanxi (杨翰西) bought land near Chongshan; construction of the Hengyun Villa (横云山庄) began the following year and continued for more than twenty years. Nearby, Wang Xinru (王心如) built the adjoining Lake Tai Villa (太湖别墅). Though privately owned, the gardens were open to the public.
The garden buildings were modelled on imperial palace architecture, with craftsmen sent to Beijing to copy designs. The Songfen Hall (诵芬堂), spanning five bays, is surrounded by water on four sides with covered corridors on three, resembling an imperial water hall; nearby, a lakeside archway called 'Juqu Shengjing' (具区胜境) closely resembles the Summer Palace's 'Yunhui Yuyu' archway (云辉玉宇) at its Paiyun Hall (排云殿), an arrangement unusual among Jiangnan gardens.
Changchun Bridge (长春桥), built in 1936 in the style of the Summer Palace's Jade Belt Bridge, was planted at the same time with Japanese cherries; the park now holds more than 30,000 cherry trees. The nearby islands, formerly uninhabited, have been developed since 1994 into Taoist-themed structures, the Lake Tai Fairy Islands (太湖仙岛), reached by tourist boat.
What to look for
- The turtle-head peninsula creates a prominent viewpoint over Lake Tai.
- Changchun Bridge forms a distinctive waterside scene, with seasonal cherry blossom nearby.
Background & history
Yuantouzhu (Chinese: 鼋头渚; pinyin: Yuán tóu zhǔ) is a peninsula which lies on the northwestern shore of Lake Tai, near Wuxi in China's Jiangsu province. It was established as a park in 1916 and celebrated its centennial in 2016. Yuantouzhu, or "Turtle Head Isle" in English (so called because its shape resembles a turtle's head), is a popular scenic tourist region. Tourist ferries leave from Yuantouzhu to the Sanshan Islands (三山岛), which were opened to tourists in the mid-1980s. Seagulls follow the boat and like to be fed by tourists on the boat. The Yuantouzhu park is famous for its tourism, especially during the spring season from March to April, when hundreds of cherry blossom trees start to bloom. Two gates are open for tourists which are Chongshan gate and Dushan main gate. During the season, there are also at least eight ancient fishing sailboats on the lake.
