About Shaoxing Museum
Its roof draws on the bronze house with musicians known as the Jiyue Tongwu, turning an archaeological object into an architectural reference. The collection includes Yue bronzes and a pierced phoenix-pattern mirror, providing concrete ways to compare ritual, music and metalwork. Begin outside with the building and sword-like forecourt sculpture, then follow the archaeological galleries; individual objects may rotate between display and storage.
The museum's older building opened in 1992 with two above-ground floors and 1,800 square metres of exhibition space. Its newer principal building has galleries both above and below ground, providing 3,720 square metres of exhibition space. The surrounding complex includes buildings with flat roofs covered by green vegetation.
The permanent exhibition commemorates the city's 2,500 years of history through the civilization of ancient Yue and the customs of its people. Two further galleries accommodate temporary exhibitions. The collection includes weapons associated with four generations of kings who ruled the state of Yue.
