About Hualin Temple

Dating to 964, the hall has a broad hip-and-gable roof supported by substantial columns and a remarkably expressive bracket system. Cloud-shaped timber struts are among its most distinctive structural details.

The surrounding entrance buildings are later reconstructions, and the ancient hall itself underwent major conservation and relocation in the twentieth century. Concentrate on the surviving hall’s frame, proportions and joinery.

Hualin Temple was founded in 964 during the Northern Song by Bao Xiurang (鲍修让), a Wuyue-kingdom official then in charge of Fuzhou's administration, who built it to pray for peace in the region. First named Yueshan Jixiang Chan Temple (越山吉祥禅院), it received its present name in 1444 when the Ming Zhengtong emperor bestowed a plaque reading Hualin Temple. The temple was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt, and in 1966 its gate, Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, corridors and walls were demolished, leaving only the Song-period main hall standing.

The surviving Main Hall (大雄宝殿) is built in beam-frame style with a single-eave, nine-ridge roof whose eighteen columns are supported above by a dougong bracket system. Carbon-14 testing of samples taken during 1980s repairs dated its members to about 1,200 years, confirming the 964 construction date and that its frame and brackets are original. Though only three bays wide, it uses top-grade (一等材) timber that the Song manual Yingzao Fashi (营造法式) reserved for much larger halls.

It is the oldest surviving timber-frame building south of the Yangtze River, and its construction technique influenced Japanese architecture of the Kamakura period (12th century). The site was designated a provincial cultural heritage site in 1953 and, in 1982, a Major National Historical and Cultural Site (全国重点文物保护单位).
