About Bawangling
That conservation role does not make it a public gibbon-viewing safari. Ordinary visitors should use only designated forest visitor areas and interpretation facilities, keeping core habitat off the itinerary. A rewarding visit focuses on the forest itself: large trees, layered vegetation and the relationship between the protected mountains and the communities around them.
The national-level nature reserve (国家级自然保护区) covers 8,444.3 hectares across Changjiang and Baisha counties in western Hainan. It has a tropical monsoon climate and contains naturally occurring tropical coniferous forest, including nanya pine forest (南亚松林). Its wildlife includes the Hainan black crested gibbon, described as being on the verge of extinction, and the Hainan partridge.
Conservation work connects gaps in the canopy with rope bridges, allowing gibbons to move between separated stretches of forest. Managers also plant native food trees, including figs and lychees, to improve the supply of fruit. These measures address the fragmentation of feeding habitat and help expand the areas available to the animals.
