Palcho Monastery 白居寺

Baiju Si

Palcho, also called Pelkor Chode or Baiju Monastery, brings together several Tibetan Buddhist traditions at the foot of Gyantse’s hills.

Entry & permits for Tibet (Xizang)

Foreign tourists need Tibet entry approval, commonly called a Tibet Travel Permit, and an organised visit arranged through a specialist travel agency in China. Confirm your approved route before booking transport. Requirements differ for Taiwan residents and for travellers using mainland or Hong Kong/Macao Chinese resident documents; check the document guide before you book.

About Palcho Monastery

Its outstanding feature is the Kumbum: a stepped stupa filled with small chapels, sculpture and painted religious imagery. Beside it, the Tsokchen assembly hall offers a different scale, with timber columns and hanging textiles surrounding the worship space. A visit works best as a comparison between the broad communal hall and the more intimate sequence of chapels inside the stupa.

The Gyantse ruler Rabten Kunzang Phak (绕丹贡桑帕) and Khedrup Je (克珠杰), later recognized as the first Panchen Lama, jointly established the monastery. Construction ran from 1418 to 1425. Funds for comprehensive repair were provided in 1977, and restored sections reopened in December 1979. The complex became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 1998.

The holdings include sets of the Buddhist canon (大藏经) written with gold powder, each comprising 111 volumes. About one hundred Tibetan opera costumes were sewn from silk fabrics produced in mainland China during the Ming and Qing periods. These materials include silk tapestry, embroidery and brocade, alongside the monastery's other religious textiles and objects.

What to look for

  • The Kumbum’s tiered structure, chapel doors and surviving murals.
  • The Tsokchen assembly hall, with its columns, thangkas and Buddha images.

The surrounding area

A separate western urban centre anchored by Tashilhunpo, suitable for a considered extension from Lhasa.

Location & getting there

Getting to Palcho Monastery

Use Palcho/Baiju Monastery at the foot of Zongshan, northwest of central Gyantse town.

  • Check the Kumbum’s open levels separately from the main assembly hall and follow the permitted interior circulation.
General visit reminders

Choose the building, exhibition or part of the historic area you most want to see, then leave time to explore its setting. Check the venue’s current opening and reservation arrangements directly; a place appearing on the map does not mean every building or gallery is accessible on your travel date.

Combine your visit

Suggested order for this visit:

  1. Tsokchen assembly hall

Begin with the monastery’s communal religious space.

  2. Kumbum exterior

Read the stepped stupa and its many chapel openings.

  3. Open Kumbum chapels

Look closely at the sculpture and murals without assuming every level is accessible.

This is an editorial sequence based on the features described in the sources. Confirm access locally; no walking time, shared admission or guaranteed interior access is implied.
