About Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Museum

Its collections go beyond portraits and speeches: printing equipment, medical tools, currency and everyday objects show how the wartime base functioned. This makes the museum a useful starting point before the surviving residential and office compounds elsewhere in Yan’an. Focus on the material evidence of communication, work and daily life as well as the political chronology.

The museum was established in January 1950, one of the first revolutionary museums founded in China after 1949. It relocated several times, moving to Yangjialing (杨家岭) in 1954 under the name Yan'an Museum, to Fenghuang Mountain (凤凰山) in 1955 as the Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial Museum, and to Wangjiaping (王家坪) in 1973, where it underwent a large renovation in 1996. A bronze statue of Mao Zedong (毛泽东), five metres tall and inscribed with calligraphy by Jiang Zemin (江泽民), was installed in 1997. The old building was demolished from 2006, and a new museum building, covering 238 mu with a main structure of 29,853 square metres, opened free to the public in 2009.

The museum is organised into six thematic sections and includes a Prefatory Hall with bronze statues of Mao Zedong (毛泽东), Zhu De and Zhou Enlai, as well as a ‘New Market’ exhibit reconstructing a Yan'an commercial street damaged by wartime bombing. Its holdings include more than 35,000 cultural relics, 5,500 historical photographs, 12,000 volumes of books and other material, and over 100 kinds of journals and magazines from the Yan'an period. It was rated a national first-grade museum (国家一级博物馆) in 2008.
