About Bride's Pool

The short trail also reaches the old Bride’s Pool stone bridge, once part of the link between Wu Kau Tang and Chung Mei. Those geological and built details give the outing more substance than a single waterfall photograph. Stay on the designated route and viewpoints: a short mapped distance does not remove the risks of slippery rocks, heavy rain or rising water.

According to local tradition, the pool takes its name from a bride whose wedding party was travelling from Tai Mei Tuk (大美督) to Sha Tau Kok (沙头角); one of the sedan-chair bearers slipped on blood-stained rock at the site, and the bride fell with the chair into the pool below the waterfall and drowned.

The waterfall known as Bride's Pool Waterfall (新娘潭瀑布) drops about 15 metres into a broad, deep pool whose unpolluted water remains clear to the bottom; in summer, visitors swim there to cool off in its clean, cool water. Bride's Pool forms part of a small river marked by a string of waterfalls and plunge pools, with Mirror Pool (照镜潭) close by.

What to look for

  • Water-worn potholes and cascades show how the stream has shaped the rock.
  • The old stone bridge preserves a crossing on the former Wu Kau Tang–Chung Mei route.
