About Grand Lisboa

The flaring upper form is best understood from outside before approaching the hotel. In the lobby, the Star of Stanley Ho provides a much smaller focal point: a cushion-shaped diamond displayed as part of the property’s collection. A short visit can therefore pair the building’s exterior with a specific display, without needing to plan a stay or a gaming visit.

Grand Lisboa's casino was completed on 11 February 2007, when Macau's Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah (何厚铧) presided over its opening; the hotel building followed in 2008, opening on 17 December of that year. The property is owned and operated by the Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau (澳门旅游娱乐有限公司), with its casino and slot-machine hall run by the Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (澳门博彩股份有限公司). On completion it became the second-tallest building in Macau after the Macau Tower and the territory's first “seven-star” five-star hotel, with 430 guest rooms.

The tower was designed by the Hong Kong firm Dennis Lau and Ng Chun Man Architects (刘荣广伍振民建筑师事务所), whose plans echo the firm's building at 18 Hanoi Road in Hong Kong and an unadopted design for Jueyueting (爵悦庭), rendered here in a wilder style. Its main entrance faces the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge (嘉乐庇总督大桥), and netting is fitted above the casino's gaming tables, said to represent guests caught in a spider's web with no escape.

The surrounding area holds several other casinos and slot-machine halls, including Wynn Macau, and Grand Lisboa stands next to the Hotel Lisboa, to which it is linked by a footbridge continuing on to the Casino Kam Pek. On clear days it can also be seen from Lung Kwu Tan (龙鼓滩) in Hong Kong.

What to look for

  • The tower’s flaring form is inspired by the lotus.
  • The lobby display features the cushion-shaped Star of Stanley Ho diamond.
