Hanzhong Museum and Ancient Han Terrace 汉中市博物馆与古汉台

Hanzhong Shi Bowuguan Yu Guhantai

Hanzhong Museum and Ancient Han Terrace (汉中市博物馆与古汉台) is a group museum in Hantai District, Hanzhong, Shaanxi, built on three historic remains, of which 古汉台 is described as the palace site of the Han king 刘邦 in Hanzhong.

A courtyard of the 古汉台 complex: a traditional hall with a grey tiled roof, green glazed ridge tiles and an ornate finial, red doors and a red banner, seen across a clipped box hedge and a lawn with trees; a carved stone balustrade with lion-topped posts runs along the left, a black double lamp post stands in front of it, and a paved path of grey bricks curves away at the right under a bright overcast sky.

About Hanzhong Museum and Ancient Han Terrace

People's Daily Online's Shaanxi channel describes 汉中市博物馆 as a group museum formed from three historic remains – 古汉台, 拜将坛 and 饮马池 – with 5,220 objects in its collection, 45 of them first-grade. It describes 古汉台 as the palace site of the Han king 刘邦 in Hanzhong, and quotes a museum guide, 熊娇, saying it is the site of the palace where 刘邦 stayed in Hanzhong and is regarded as a symbol of the Han foundation.

The same page says the city set up 汉中博物馆 on the 古汉台 site in 1958, and that the buildings follow 古汉台's original architectural style and layout, rising through three courtyards from south to north.

Its thematic displays are listed as 石门十三品, 古褒斜栈道, 汉中汉代史迹, 汉中宋墓出土文物, 古代名人字画, 馆藏宗教造像艺术 and 汉中近代革命史迹. 石门十三品, a national first-grade relic, is called the highest achievement of both writing and carving, and the museum's director, 卢辉, says the characters 辞 and 海 come from the cliff inscription 石门颂 and that the group is material for studying the old Baoxie plank road and Hanzhong's water conservancy and transport as well as a place calligraphers come to see.

The museum's statutory filing with the Shaanxi Provincial Public Institution Registration Administration gives its registered purpose as 收藏展览文物,弘扬民族文化, its business scope as 文物保护、征集、鉴定、登编、修复、保管 and 文物展览、文物复仿制、文物及相关研究,文物景点的管理及开发利用、文物宣传出版、考古发掘, its registered address as 汉台区东大街26号, its legal representative as 卢辉, its sponsoring unit as 汉中市文物旅游局 and its staff as 59.

The same filing, covering the 2023 year, records submitting 汉台遗址保护展示项目 and 古汉台展陈提升改造项目 for project approval. It also records that the 西汉三遗址 area's protective use was progressing slowly, with the 古汉台南院 expansion and the 饮马池 conservation and display stalled and the grouped municipal museum not yet fulfilling its role.

Neither source gives opening hours or tickets, and neither describes the state of the collection. The account of stalled works is the museum's own 2023 self-report and is stated here as such.
