About Nanliang Revolutionary Memorial Hall
The account on the Institute of Party History and Literature page begins in 1930, when, it says, Communist forces were spreading revolutionary ideas and organising armed struggle in the Shaanxi-Gansu border area and were active around Nanliang in Huachi. Between 1932 and 1933 they formed a guerrilla force and then the Red 26th Army. In February 1934 a revolutionary committee for the border area was elected at Sihetai near Nanliang, and in early November of that year a workers', peasants' and soldiers' congress at Liyuan Fort formally established a Soviet government and a revolutionary military committee for the border area. The page records that the base area then grew from Huachi into eighteen counties in Gansu and Shaanxi, joining with the northern Shaanxi base area to form the Shaanxi-Gansu revolutionary base area, which it describes as the only revolutionary base area left standing in the later phase of the Agrarian Revolutionary War, as the foothold the central leadership and the Central Red Army found after the Long March, and as one of the departure points for the Eighth Route Army's move north to resist Japan.
The hall was built to commemorate that history and, the page says, was completed on 7 November 1986. It occupies 33.12 mu with 2,281 sq m of floor area. A two-storey archaistic gate tower more than 10 m high stands at the front, carrying the hall's name in calligraphy; a 34.117 m monument in the grounds has an inscription on its face and the names of 608 martyrs cut into its side and rear faces. From 2008, the page records, the Qingyang city authorities repaired the hall, built a new exhibition building and added display material.
The page lists the designations the site has received: a Gansu provincial patriotism education base in December 1994; a national patriotism education base designated by the CPC Central Committee Propaganda Department in June 2001; inclusion, in December 2004, among the national hundred classic red-tourism scenic areas; a Gansu provincial Party-history education base the same month; and a national 3A-grade scenic area in March 2010. A Huachi County government portal news item of 8 October 2024 reports the hall as a red-tourism destination in the county over that year's National Day holiday and quotes its guide saying that all the docents in its interpretation department were on duty through the holiday period.
