About Panjier Stone Forest
The stone forest lies on the ridge and slopes of Panjier Tage mountain in Kerjian Township, Toksun County, at an average elevation of 1,200 m; the county government page places it 55 km south-east of the Toksun county seat and 10 km from Kerjian Township. It is a peak-forest landform formed by dissolution and wind erosion and is known as "Panjier Tage", which the municipal government page says means "mountain like a many-holed window" in Uygur.
Individual stone forms are generally 2 to 5 m, with large ones over ten metres, and the total area is about 1 sq km. The rock bodies are mostly Carboniferous volcanic rock and breccia tuff, grey-blue and brownish red, and the rock contains abundant calcium carbonate. The municipal page describes the stone forest as a Carboniferous volcanic mountain-type stone forest and calls it the only wind-eroded igneous stone forest area found in China so far; that is the page's own claim and is reported here as such.
A long suspension bridge now crosses the river bed below the stone forest and leads to the foot of the climb into it, according to the municipal page. The record does not present the bridge or the stairway the page also describes as a recommended route. The sources give no ticket or opening information and do not state whether the site is a designated scenic area.
What to look for
- The stone forms themselves, generally 2 to 5 m with large ones over ten metres, in Carboniferous volcanic rock and breccia tuff that the sources describe as grey-blue or brownish red.
- The suspension bridge across the river bed below the stone forest, which the municipal page says leads to the foot of the climb into it.
- The timber stairway the page describes running up through the stone forest, whose longest and steepest section it counts at 518 steps.
