About Hefei

The museum’s bronzes connect the province with early states around the Yangtze and Huai rivers. Lord Bao Park instead follows the memory of Bao Zheng through a shrine, tomb complex and Qingfeng Tower. These sights occupy different parts of the city, so build a visit around one museum session and one outdoor area, allowing for the transfer.

Archaeologists have found evidence of human activity in the Hefei area dating to the Paleolithic period, at sites including Miaodongying (庙东郢) in Shushan District and the Yinshan Homo sapiens site (银山智人遗址) in what is now Chaohu. The name Hefei first appears in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, which describes it as a place 'receiving the tides from north and south', a hub for trading hides, dried fish and timber; Hefei County was formally established under Jiujiang commandery during the Qin-Han transition.

Under the Western Zhou, the Zhou king divided the earlier state of Chao into the states of Lu and Chao, with Lu's capital near the site of present-day Hefei; during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods the area passed through the states of Chu, Wu, Yue and Chu again. In the Sui and Tang dynasties it became the seat of Lu Prefecture, a name it retained until the 15th century, when it became a superior prefecture named Luzhou, a name in use through the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Background & history

Hefei is the capital of Anhui province, China. A prefecture-level city, it is the political, economic, and cultural center of Anhui. Its built-up (or metro) area is made up of four urban districts plus Feidong, Feixi and Changfeng counties being urbanized, and was home to 7,754,481 inhabitants. Located in the central portion of the province, it borders Huainan to the north, Chuzhou to the northeast, Wuhu to the southeast, Tongling to the south, Anqing to the southwest and Lu'an to the west. A natural hub of communications, Hefei is situated to the north of Chao Lake and stands on a low saddle crossing the northeastern extension of the Dabie Mountains, which forms the divide between the Huai and Yangtze rivers. The present-day city dates from the Song dynasty. Before World War II, Hefei remained essentially an administrative centre and the regional market for the fertile plain to the south. It has gone through a growth in infrastructure in recent years.
