About China Printing Museum
Its displays include printing equipment and printed material, with interpretation of papermaking and a reconstruction associated with Bi Sheng’s movable-type work. The useful comparison is between the physical processes: preparing a writing surface, making repeatable characters or plates, and producing multiple copies. Follow that sequence through the exhibits instead of treating the machines as isolated objects. The museum offers a focused material-history visit on the southern side of Beijing.
Preparations for the museum began in 1992, and the building was completed on 1 June 1996. Expansion followed in 2000, with an underground exhibition hall completed in 2001. The complex has a total floor area of 8,100 square metres. The museum is on the campus of Beijing Yinshua Xueyuan (北京印刷学院).
The displays are arranged in four halls, including the Origins and Ancient China Hall (源头古代馆) and Printing Equipment Hall (印刷设备馆). Separate thematic exhibitions address subjects such as early European printing (欧洲早期印刷), currency printing (钱币印刷) and stamp printing (邮票印刷). The collection also includes printed manuscripts and ceramics.
What to look for
- Papermaking interpretation: examine the stages that turn raw plant material into a usable sheet.
- Movable type and printing equipment: compare individual characters with the larger systems used to reproduce text.
