About Dabaotai Western Han Tombs Museum
The tomb structures and inner and outer coffins provide an unusually direct way to study elite Han burial arrangements, because the museum remains tied to the excavated site rather than only displaying displaced objects. Reopened after renovation in 2025 as a branch of the Beijing Archaeological Site Museum, it combines the tomb setting with interpretation of Han civilization. Focus on the construction and spatial arrangement of the burial before exploring the wider exhibition context.
What to look for
- Tomb No. 1 structure: examine the burial layout and the relationship between inner and outer coffins.
- Han burial interpretation: connect the surviving architecture with the status and funerary practices of the tomb occupants.
