About Beijing World Park
Its entrance combines European-inspired architectural forms, followed by landscaped areas containing models such as the Eiffel Tower, Tower Bridge, and Egyptian pyramids. The experience is about comparing recognizable silhouettes and the craft of the replicas rather than visiting historic originals. Pick two continental sections for a relaxed circuit, looking at scale, ornament, and landscaping; performances and other entertainment should be checked against the park’s current program.
Beijing World Park broke ground on 5 April 1992 and, after more than a year of construction, opened on a trial basis on 29 September 1993 before formally opening on 25 October 1993; it covers 46.7 hectares. It is rated one of Beijing's ten quality parks and is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区).
The scenic area is arranged around a naturalized layout of the globe, with its four main oceans and five continents, Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America; it holds about a hundred scaled landmarks, most built at a 1:10 scale, from nearly 40 countries and regions, each landmark positioned according to its real-world location. A separate area includes thematic attractions such as 'Fairy Tale World' (童话世界) and a 'Zodiac Garden' (生肖园), and the park occasionally hosts folk-custom performances from different countries.
Some replicas were built with materials matched to the originals: the Great Pyramids model used 200,000 white marble bricks, each about the size of a bar of soap, while a Red Square replica was paved with more than five million red bricks smaller than mahjong tiles. Scattered lawns also carry miniature statues, including the Statue of Liberty, Copenhagen's Little Mermaid, Michelangelo's David, and the Venus de Milo.
What to look for
- European landmark models: compare recognizable forms such as the Eiffel Tower and Tower Bridge at reduced scale.
- Egyptian pyramid group: examine how the replica setting communicates a very different monumental landscape.
