About Hong'an Border Town
Its small riverfront is best understood through the Lala Du, the cable-hauled ferry that connects daily life on the banks. Stone-paved lanes and old Tujia and Miao buildings rise behind the landing. The town is associated with Shen Congwen's Border Town, but the working crossing and the street beside it provide the most immediate experience: boats coming in, riverside houses and an old trading settlement shaped by provincial borders.
What to look for
- Lala Du ferry landing: watch the traditional cable-hauled crossing on the Qingshui River; boarding depends on the current service.
- Hong'an old street: stone paving and older Tujia and Miao buildings preserve the settlement's river-trading character.
