About Chongqing Zoo

The panda areas are a natural starting point, but a second section makes the visit more varied than concentrating on one enclosure. Animal visibility changes with daily care, weather and the animals’ choices, so use the visitor map to plan a flexible circuit. Keep to the public viewing areas and allow room around crowded habitats.

Before 1949 the site was a private garden. Construction of the zoo began in 1953, and it opened as a park named West District Park in 1954, officially opening to the public on 24 January 1955 with 11 species and 60 animals on display. It was renamed Chongqing Zoo on 1 November 1960, by which point it exhibited 103 species and 589 animals, and by 1966 this had grown to 137 species and 735 animals, giving it the scale of a medium-sized zoo.

Chongqing Zoo lies in Yangjiaping (杨家坪) in Jiulongpo District, about 8 kilometres from the city centre, at an elevation of 240 to 305.8 metres, and covers 45 hectares. It is one of only three zoos in China that keep the largest numbers of giant pandas, and it serves as a giant panda breeding base and a population base for the national South China tiger breeding programme. It is rated a national AAAA tourist attraction and was selected as a National Key Park in 2009, and it currently displays more than 230 species of animals, totalling over 4000 individuals.

What to look for

  • Giant-panda and red-panda habitats show two very different animals that share a common English name.
  • Tiger and elephant areas offer contrasting larger-mammal exhibits.
