Setting and landscape

The Jinyun Mountains (缙云山) wind along the western border. East of the Zhongliang ridge the ground is low hill country, much of it river valley below 300 metres; to the west the land falls from northwest to southeast across shallow hills and flat basins. The climate belongs to the humid subtropical monsoon type of the Sichuan Basin, with little sunshine, summer droughts, long autumn rains and foggy winters.

History

The land once belonged to the old counties of Jiangzhou (江州县), Dianjiang (垫江县) and Ba (巴县). In 1950 two city districts were merged into Chongqing's Fourth District, which took the name Jiulongpo on 24 October 1955. The district government moved to Yangjiaping (杨家坪) in November 1988, and in 1995 eight towns of the former Ba County, among them Baishiyi (白市驿) and Zouma (走马), were transferred in.

Chinese Wikipedia describes Jiulongpo as Chongqing's most important heavy-industry district. Its colleges include Chongqing University of Technology (重庆理工大学) and the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (四川美术学院), and Yucai Middle School (重庆育才中学) was founded by the educator Tao Xingzhi (陶行知).

What to see

Chongqing Jianchuan Museum (重庆建川博物馆) occupies the former First Arsenal of the Ordnance Department (兵工署第一兵工厂), part of a group of wartime weapons-industry sites listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit. The district government calls it China's first cave museum of the War of Resistance against Japan: it is made up of 11 themed museums, holds more than 100,000 objects and is a national 4A scenic area.

Chongqing Ba People Museum (重庆巴人博物馆), completed in April 2007, is a national second-class museum devoted to the ancient Ba people, their state and their culture.

In Zouma town, the oral stories of people who drove horses for a living make up the Zouma folk tales (走马镇民间故事), placed on the first national intangible-heritage list in 2006. The market town dates from the late Ming or early Qing, and a 1980s survey there recorded 9,714 tales, some about the dragon and snake totems of the Ba.
