Setting and landscape
Coloane was a separate island until reclamation merged it with Taipa; a causeway, the Estrada do Istmo, first linked the two in 1969. Its terrain is mountainous. Its summit, Coloane Alto (疊石塘山), is Macau's highest point, and the land above its mid-slopes is set aside as country park and as the A-Ma Cultural Village (媽祖文化村). Hac Sa Beach (黑沙海灘) on the east coast and Cheoc Van (竹灣) on the south coast are its best-known beaches.
History
Under the Qing, Coloane produced salt: its western bay was once called Salt-stove Bay (鹽灶灣), and the water in front of the Tam Kong Temple (譚公廟) was given over to salt pans. Coloane belonged to Xiangshan County (香山縣) in Guangdong until Portugal took it in 1864. In July 1910 pirates on the island kidnapped 18 schoolchildren from Xinning (新寧). Portuguese troops landed at Ká-Hó (九澳), burned Ká-Hó village and in the end freed the 18 hostages; a monument to the victory over the pirates stands in front of the chapel in Coloane Village. Fishing was long the mainstay, and the shipyards of Lai Chi Vun (荔枝碗), north of Coloane Village, now stand disused.
What to see
The Macao Government Tourism Office maps a short walk through Coloane Village with views across the channel to Hengqin (橫琴). It starts at Coloane Pier, rebuilt in 1873 and once the island's ferry link to Taipa and the Macau Peninsula. The Chapel of St Francis Xavier (路環聖方濟各堂), built in 1928, has a cream and white facade with oval windows. The Tin Hau temple (天后古廟), built around 1763, is described by the tourism office as the oldest temple on the island; the Kun Iam temple was built by sea traders around 1800 and the Sam Seng temple in 1865. The Tam Kong Temple honours Tam Kong, a Taoist god of seafarers, and has a roof decorated with porcelain figures.
