Blueberry Jam (蓝莓果酱) from Daxing'anling Prefecture (大兴安岭地区), Heilongjiang, in China's far north, is made from the wild blueberries of the Greater Khingan (大兴安岭) forests. An article on the National Forestry and Grassland Administration website lists jam with dried berries, blueberry juice and blueberry wine as products of these wild berries that sell in China and abroad.

Ingredients

The fruit is a low deciduous shrub berry of the genus Vaccinium in the heath family. Forest-region people call it dushi (都柿), and the Oroqen (鄂伦春) name is written dushi (笃柿). The berries are blue with fine flesh and very small seeds, and weigh 0.5 to 2.5 grams on average. They grow north of latitude 52 degrees, in mixed conifer and broadleaf forest and forest clearings at 400 to 1,000 metres, and survive cold down to minus 50 degrees Celsius. They grow in abundance across the prefecture, from Jiagedaqi (加格达奇) in the south to Mohe (漠河) in the north. Eaten fresh, the berry tastes astringently sour and faintly sweet.

Where it comes from

The berries ripen from mid to late July and reach the markets in quantity in August, a season of about 40 days. An official of the prefecture's green-products bureau told Xinhua in 2024 that about 90% of China's wild blueberries come from Daxing'anling. After Heilongjiang's key state-owned forest regions stopped all commercial logging of natural forests in 2014, berry and nut processing businesses, mostly based on wild blueberries, sprang up in Jiagedaqi, Tahe (塔河) and Huzhong (呼中), and Xinhua counts fruit wine, sweets and jam among the prefecture's berry and nut product types.

China Rural Network described the Chaoyue (超越) company in Tahe as concentrating on mid-range wine, dried berries, jam and oral liquid. Daxing'anling became the protected area for the "China Arctic Blueberry" (中国北极蓝莓) geographical indication in 2009, and the prefecture has held a China Daxing'anling International Blueberry Festival every year since 2009.
