About Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

Its southern-facing complex is arranged along a north–south axis, with halls and courtyards forming a symmetrical sequence. Today it houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, so the building itself and the displayed crafts belong in the same visit.

Spend time looking above the main doors and along the rooflines. The woodwork, pottery decoration and densely worked roof carvings show how much of the visual interest lies in details rather than in the size of the halls. Moving from the entrance axis into the side courts makes the layout easier to understand.

What to look for

  • Follow the axis through the halls and six courtyards to see the balanced arrangement.
  • Look closely at the roof carvings, woodwork and pottery decoration.
  • The Guangdong Folk Art Museum connects the building to southern Chinese craft traditions.

The surrounding area

Provincial capital and a city base for Cantonese food, Liwan's old neighborhoods and Pearl River urban life.

Location & getting there

Getting to Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

The complex is on Zhongshan 7th Road beside Chen Clan Academy station. Use the hall’s main frontage on that road as the arrival point, rather than another building with a Chen-family association.

General visit reminders

Choose the building, exhibition or part of the historic area you most want to see, then leave time to explore its setting. Check the venue’s current opening and reservation arrangements directly; a place appearing on the map does not mean every building or gallery is accessible on your travel date.

Suggested order for the visit:

Read the symmetrical arrangement of halls.

  2. Rooflines and side courtyards
