About Shamian
Tree-lined avenues and European-style buildings give the area a different rhythm from the surrounding commercial streets. Its appeal lies in the relationship between individual facades, shaded streets and the river edge.
Treat the visit as an outdoor architectural circuit. Pause at changes in building style and street width, then continue towards the Pearl River to see how the island sits within the trading city. Some historic buildings now contain hotels or other businesses, so an interesting exterior does not automatically mean the interior is open to sightseers.
What to look for
- Tree-lined pedestrian avenues frame the former concession buildings.
- Compare the varied historic facades along the island’s streets.
- The river edge helps explain Shamian’s position within Guangzhou’s old trading districts.
The surrounding area
Provincial capital and a city base for Cantonese food, Liwan's old neighborhoods and Pearl River urban life.
